Fifty eight years prison sentences for hunger strikers

One year and six month prison sentence was handed down to each of the 39 defendants who had carried out a hunger strike in Ceylanpýnar (Urfa) in 2009 to protest against the operations and pressures against the term’s Kurdish party DTP (Democratic Society Party).

The case against 39 people who carried out a two-day hunger strike in Diyarbakýr in May of 2009 was opened by Ceylanpýnar Penal Court of First Instance on the grounds of “opposing the law on meetings and demonstrations”. The court sentenced 39 hunger strikers, who also consist of district chairs and city council members of the term’s DTP and today’s BDP, to one year and six months in prison for each.

As the court suspended the sentence and ruled five year supervised liberty, defendants objected to the decision and remarked that they will take the case to the ECHR in the event of rejection of their objection.
