Fight child labour, IHD tells government

In a press statement on the occasion of 12 June World Day against Child Labour, Human Rights Association (IHD) Diyarbakýr Branch Children’s Commission called on local governments and the governor of Diyarbakýr to be more effective and to hold seminars in order to increase social consciousness about fight against child labour. The statement reported that child labour has remarkable increased in Diyarbakýr where a great majority of forcibly migrated families work or remain under the threat of being forced to work.

IHD Diyarbakýr Branch Children’s Commission reminded of the children’s rights spelled out in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and underlined that children’s inherent rights to education, healthcare, housing and protection from violence and all kinds of abuse should be protected by national governments that have committed themselves to protecting and ensuring children's rights by agreeing to undertake the obligations of the Convention.

The statement pointed out that millions of children in the world have been prevented from their rights, especially in Turkey and developing countries because of the deficiency in the fight against child labour and absence of works for consciousness raising about the matter.

The Children’s Commission remarked that forced migration has remarkably increased child labour in Turkey and put emphasis on the following points as a solution to the problem of the children;

- Putting children to work is violence against them.

- Children should be educated and allowed to play games for a healthy development.

- Bestow hand on children instead of giving them money.

The statement ended wishing a world to enable children live their childhood.
