First part of the Law on Execution accepted

The first part of the execution law proposal being discussed in Parliament, covering articles 1-30, was approved. 90 amendment proposals by the opposition were rejected.

Turkey's parliament has passed 7 clauses of the prison reform bill that includes postponing or relaxing sentences so to allow the release of some 90 thousands prisoners on parole or house arrest to avoid the spread of coronavirus in jails.

The clauses passed earlier today give more authority of enforcement judges on releases on parole, prison transfers and approval or appeal periods.

All proposals by opposition parties had been rejected on Friday.

The bill includes the transfer of prisoners aged over 65, women with young children to house arrest, and will reduce jail time for other prisoners, who will be allowed to serve a longer part of their sentences on parole.

Thousands of people in jail for political (i.e. for opposing the ruling AKP) reasons as well as journalists and people jailed for their thoughts are excluded from the proposed law.

The Parliament is set to reconvene to discuss the bill on Sunday.
