Greens-European Free Alliance in the European Parliament Corsican parliamentarian François Alfonsi and José Bové, leader of the French farmers group, tabled an official parliamentary written question to the EU Commission about the isolation PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) leader Abdullah Öcalan is being subjected to.
The parliamentary question was answered by EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, Mr Stefan Füle (in charge also of the EU-Turkey Accession talks), on behalf of the European Commission.
Füle remarked that the denial of Öcalan’s meeting with his lawyers in the last one year could be a probable violation of both Turkish judicial mechanisms and the European Convention on Human Rights.
Reminding of European Union’s listing PKK among terrorist organizations and its solidarity with Turkey in fight against terror, Füle noted that; “The EU underlines that all sides should make an effort to ensure that Turkey brings peace for all of its citizens. The southeastern region of Turkey needs peace, democracy, stability as well as social, economic and cultural development”
Füle said that there is also a need for reconciliation on concrete measures in respect to the solution of the Kurdish problem and called on all sides to make an effort for peace and welfare in the country.
The parliamentary written question by Françolis Alfonsi and José Bové called attention to intensifying clashes and political developments related with the Kurdish problem in the country. The motion by two parliamentarians also reminded that thousands of BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) members, including elected representatives, have been put under arrest in the last several years.
Kurdish militants have displayed a determined protest against the pressure imposed on Kurds, said Alfonsi and Bové who also reminded of the 52 day hunger strike of 15 demonstrators in Strasbourg and the hunger strike of hundreds of political prisoners in Turkey in February and March.
The motion on Öcalan’s isolation also directed the question “What kind of a step will be taken to ensure a peaceful change in the Kurdish problem on the basis of respect to the rights of the Kurdish people?”
