General Staff: Roboski bombing respected standard procedures

The fact sheet Turkish General Staff sent to the Parliamentary Human Rights Investigation Commission about the bombardment in Roboski village of Uludere/Þýrnak said that the operation was conducted following the standard procedures.

The General Staff argued that the intelligence service before the operation was provided by “national sources and “governmental institutions”.

The 2 April 2012 dated seven-page facts sheet said that “the documents and information received before the operation were referred to Chief Public Prosecutor of Diyarbakýr and we therefore don’t have the possibility to send these documents to your side because of the confidentiality verdict ruled by the prosecutor”.

“The event is sorrowful in humanitarian respect, however, in military respect it was performed within the framework of cross-border operation decision-making mechanism and within the rules established and authorities given to Turkish Armed forces.”, said the Turkish General Staff and noted that the bombardment was made after receiving “unconfirmed information which said that there were around 30 terrorists in the region”.

The Commission, finding the facts sheet “inadequate”, decided to consider re-writing to the General Staff and to give warning to relevant institutions to not to hide behind the confidentiality verdict of courts.
