German Cabinet approves withdrawal from Incirlik

The German Cabinet has decided to withdraw German soldiers from Turkey's İncirlik Air Base.

German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen’s plan to withdraw German troops from the Incirlik Air Base was approved in the Cabinet. Even though the German soldiers were sent to Incirlik on the Federal Parliament’s decision, as it didn’t include the name of the base, the final decision can be made by the government, instead of the parliament. But the government may include the parliament in the decision, considering the German armed forces are the “army of the parliament”.

The Federal Parliament’s Armed Forces Rapporteur Hans-Peter Bartels spoke before the official decision and said the members of parliament should be included in the decree on Incirlik as it is relevant to the parliament’s authority.

German Greens Party Parliament Group Chairperson Anton Hofreiter and Die Linke Group Chairperson Dietmar Bartsch are also of the same opinion.

Greens Party Co-chair Cem Özdemir spoke to the Fünke Media Group and demanded Germany stop investing in the Incirlik Air Base.

NATO expressed concern over the two countries being unable to reconcile while the US refrained from commenting, because it’s “a matter among the two countries.”
