German government aware of guerrilla's death but not Turkey's war

HPG guerrilla-internationalist fighter Sarah Handelmann, codenamed Sara Dorşin, lost her life on 7 April 2019 as a result of the Turkish air raid on Medya Defense Zones.

The German Government issued a statement on the death of HPG guerrilla Sarah Handelmann, who was martyred as a result of a Turkish air raid on Medya Defense Zones.

The government, answering a parliamentary question tabled by Die Linke said it was not aware of the attacks and invasion attempts carried out by Turkey against Southern Kurdistan.

Die Linke MP Ulla Jelpke asked if the Federal Government under Merkel's prime ministry had any information about the death of German citizen Handelmann.

The government secretary Antje Leendertse responded to Jelpke, who also asked if the government had any knowledge of the Turkish state's attempts to invade and occupy Southern Kurdistan.

In a response dated 2 July 2019, the government confirmed that they were aware of the death of Handelmann but added they would not provide detailed information surrounding her death due to the privacy law. "We are in contact with Handelmann's relatives, - said the government representative - and claimed that they had no information about the Turkish state's invasion and attacks on Southern Kurdistan.

Jelpke: South Kurdistan is attacked with German weapons

Responding to the government's statement, Jelpke MP drew attention to the fact that the details of how Handelmann lost her life were not disclosed as they could affect German relation with the Turkish state. 

Jelpke said that 4 more civilians lost their lives in the attacks carried out by the Turkish state in the region in the past days.

She also pointed out that German weapons are used in these attacks and therefore the responsibility also fell on Germany.

The Die Linke MP reiterated the demand to ban arms sale to Turkey.
