Government tries to get citizens to pay for economic crisis

The AKP-MHP government is struggling with debt is trying to make citizens pay for its reckless war policies.

The AKP-MHP government began sending out extremely high electricity, natural gas and water bills to the citizens. Citizens can’t pay such high bills.

The power company, under the control of the government, has begun fining citizens between 5-20 thousand TL even though they haven’t use electricity illegally. Many people in Van have been serving and executing illegal electricity fines.

In addition, those who had not paid their electricity, water and natural gas bills on time have seen their service suspended.

Thousands of people have been forced to live without electricity and water for days as they couldn’t afford the high bills.

The economic crisis as well as the coronavirus pandemic have contributed to an increase in unemployment in Van. Figures speak of 85 percent unemployment rate. As this was not enough, now people have also to worry about bills they cannot pay.

Mustafa D, one of the thousands of people in Van who cannot pay their electricity bills, said: “I cannot pay my electricity debt due to high bills. My electricity has been cut off. They write invented bills. They charge us for electricity we don't use. The AKP-MHP government is trying to get citizens to pay for the crisis."
