The Green Left Party has accelerated its electoral work in Switzerland, just days before the Presidential and Parliamentary elections to be held on 14 May in Turkey and Kurdistan.
Public meetings were held in 4 cities on Sunday by the Green Left Party Election Coordination to inform voters about the party’s programme. Voting abroad will take place from 29 April to 7 May.
Geneva
A public meeting was held in the Mahatma Gandhi conference hall in Geneva with the participation of former DBP (Democratic Regions Party) co-chair Mehmet Arslan, former Sur co-mayor Fatma Şık and Election Coordination member Mehmet Sütçü.
Fatma Şık said that the Kurds continue and have to continue their struggle when they are refugees in Europe, as they do everywhere else. Saying that the Kurds have been fighting against assimilation, genocide and massacres for decades, Şık underlined the AKP government's attitude towards the Kurds during the last earthquake. Fatma Şık also touched upon the isolation in Imrali, emphasizing that there is no other option but to resist.
Aarau
Kurdish politician Ali Şimşek and Democratic Kurdish Community Center co-chair Seda Can attended the public meeting held in the city of Aarau.
Can underlined that the history of the Turkish state is a history of massacres. Seda Can commemorated those who were killed in the 1915 Armenian Genocide. Can said: “Today, hundreds of elected people and party workers have been arrested, and thousands of them have been subjected to oppression and detention. We will go to the elections on 14 May under the name of the Green Left Party against fascism.”
Ali Şimşek, on the other hand, emphasized that they will not allow the policy of denying the Kurds for another 100 years, and added: "This election will be a historical one. It is now in our hands to overthrow these dirty policies.”
Bern-Solothurn
Public meetings were held in Bern and Solothurn as part of the election activities, while the volunteers of the Swiss Green Left Party Election Coordination were out canvassing at the weekend.
