Hanging HDP election banner treated as crime

While the HDP pursues its election campaign with the party’s own means without receiving any subsidy from the state, unlike the other parties, even hanging HDP flags is being treated as a crime. A member of the HDP, Erhan Kalır, has been detained by the police as he was hanging a banner of the HDP that read: “We go to parliament for great humanity” during election campaigning that the Fatih district branch of the party pursues. Kalır was fined 208 TL for hanging the banner in Yedikule.

HDP Istanbul candidate Baran Uğurlu arrived at the police station where Kalır was being held in custody and told ANF that the fine for hanging a banner of the HDP is a sabotage not only against the party but also against all the democratic forces supporting the HDP. Kalır and Uğurlu reacted against the fine saying that hanging a banner is a legal right; however in the end they had to pay it.

Uğurlu said the party has all the legal documents to carry out election campaigning, asking the police if the fine for hanging a banner is only imposed on the HDP or if they also fine the other parties' members for it. Uğurlu said he did not receive a convincing reply to his question, while he stressed that the wall on which Kalır hung the banner of the HDP was full of other posters and banners.

Uğurlu reiterated that the HDP carries out its election campaign within the legal limits and the dates and hours as declared by the Higher Election Committee. Uğurlu also stressed that the HDP receives no subsidies and undertakes all the work and the costs of the election materials through donations and the support of volunteers.
