Hatip Dicle sentenced to two years in prison

Erzurum 2nd High Criminal Court sentenced newly elected MP Hatip Dicle to two years in prison for allegedly making "propaganda for the organization".

The trial of Labor, Democracy and Freedom Block's independent candidate Hatip Dicle, who was sued for allegedly making "propaganda for the organization" at a speech in Diyadin/Agrý in 2009, continued at 2nd High Criminal Court. In a statement Dicle said; "The speech I made, when considered objectively, served a peaceful solution to the Kurdish problem. The frantic arrests of Kurdish politicians is extremely wrong. Each circle should be able to do politics freely."

The court sentenced Dicle to two-year imprisonment and decided that there is no room for the suspension of the sentence.

In his speech during Newroz celebrations in Diyadin on 23 March 2009, Dicle, as recorded on police camera, said the followings; "Newroz has always been kept alive by the Kurdish people for 2 thousand 600 years. They paid big prices, gave martyries. As seen today, the spirits of martyries are kept alive at the mountains, plains, areas and squares of Kurdistan and in the colors of our party's flag and our movement. As you know, Diyadin gave a number of martyrs whose spirits we should bless to rise Diyadin under the torch of freedom. Kurdish and Turkish young people shouldn't be allowed to die as a soldier."
