The parliamentary group of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) made a statement to the parliamentary presidium in Ankara on the police attack on Habip Eksik. The HDP MP and doctor suffered a triple leg fracture and facial injuries as a result of targeted use of batons during a demonstration in Yüksekova district of Hakkari province on Sunday and remains in hospital. The demonstration was against the international plot to force Abdullah Öcalan to leave Syria on 9 October 1998, which led to the PKK founder's deportation to Turkey. On Sunday, protests took place in many cities in Turkey, with at least 150 detentions.
The HDP MPs, including the vice co-chairs of the parliamentary group Meral Danış Beştaş and Saruhan Oluç, protested today in Ankara against the targeted attack on parliamentarian Habip Eksik and called on the speaker of the parliament to act. Journalists present were prevented by police from following the statement. The MPs left pictures of the brutal police attack in front of the parliament's presidium, but they were immediately collected by security forces.
Saruhan Oluç stated that the attack was a planned and premeditated action against a member of parliament and that it has not been condemned to date. “This means that the Speaker of the Parliament tacitly approves of this attack. If the President of Parliament is impartial, if he has the same distance to all parties, then when an MP is attacked, no matter which party he belongs to, he should raise his voice and defend the rights of the MP. Yet, considering the fact that the Speaker of Parliament has remained silent until today and has not given us an appointment despite our request, there are strong indications that he is behind this attack. We expect an explanation from him. If he is not behind this attack, if he condemns the attack on the deputy both in terms of immunity and humanity, then we want to hear that. How can the speaker of the parliament, who speaks out on every issue, remain silent when an MP is in hospital with a broken leg?" he said.
The problem is very serious, Oluç continued: "When will the President of the Parliament make a statement, will he wait until a deputy dies? Will you wait until a deputy is massacred? Why don't you react to these crimes committed by the security forces and the Ministry of Interior? Are you also afraid of the Interior Ministry?"
The Hakkari governor's account that Eksik threw himself on the ground to make an impression is ridiculous, Oluç stated, adding, “Footage of the incident shows that more than ten people pounced on the MP, punching and kicking him. The order was given by Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu, a man with connections and contacts to the mafia, of whom there are photos with drug barons, criminals, corrupt people and mafiosi smuggled abroad.”
