HDP politicians and academics in exile began a Vigil in Berlin

Several solidarity actions are under way to support the hunger strike resistance led by DTK co-chair and HDP Hakkari MP Leyla Güven to demand the end of isolation against Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan.

HDP deputies, mayors, party councillors, district administrators, academics, artists and journalists, who were forced to live in exile, started a Vigil in Berlin to draw attention to the hunger strike resistance.

The Vigil, which is expected to continue until Friday, is held at the Brandenburg Tor district near the Federal Parliament.

Former HDP Amed deputy Nursel Aydoğan explained the reason for the Vigil, which has been launched to increase the sensitivity of the international opinion towards the hunger strike resistance. After a brief information about the hunger strike, Aydoğan read a press statement.

The text of the press release was read in Turkish by HDP former deputy Leyla Birlik, while Leyla İmret, former mayor of Cizre, read the statement in German.

The statement underlined the human rights violations in Kurdistan and Turkey and explained the demand of the hunger strikers to end isolation in Imrali.

Germany and Europe should take responsibility

The statement described the situation of the hunger strikers and added: “Everyone who believes in peace and democracy should listen to Leyla Güven. Turkey is in urgent need of peace and freedom for all people. Isolation is fueling the Kurdish problem and driving it to a dead end. Germany and other European countries with close economic cooperation with Turkey should assume a responsible attitude towards what is happening in Turkey."

HDP politicians urged the Berlin administration and Europe’s democratic forces to “support the HDP Hakkari MP. We have urged them to make pressure on the Turkish government to listen to the thousands of friends who are on hunger strike.”

Vigil to continue for four days

KCDK- co-chair Fatos Göksungur as well as representatives of the Kurdish and Turkish organizations joined the Vigil in Berlin.

The Vigil will take place every day from 1 pm to 5 pm at the Brandenburg Tor square.

Organised by the HDP Germany Representation, the Vigil will be joined among others by: former HDP deputies Faysal Sarıyıldız, Kemal Aktaş, Sibel Yiğitalp and Karakoçan former Municipal co-chair Burhan Kocaman, Varto former Municipality co-chair Hüseyin Güneş, director Önder Çakar and journalist Hayko Bağdat.
