HDP: Release our young members!

Of the 35 HDP Youth Assembly members brought to Çağlayan Courthouse, 20 were requested to be remanded in custody. A protest was organised outside the Courthouse.

Thirty-five members of the HDP Youth Council remained in custody at Istanbul Vatan Police Headquarters for 8 days before being transferred to Çağlayan Courthouse.

Fifteen of the young people, who were subjected to torture during the detention period, were released on condition of judicial control while twenty others were referred to the interrogation judiciary with the request of arrest.

HDP Istanbul Organization gathered in front of the courthouse when the young people were brought to court, and organized an action demanding the immediate release of the young people.

HDP Istanbul provincial co-chairmen Erdal Avcı and Elif Bulut, as well as many HDP executives and members joined the action, together with the families and friends of the young activists.

HDP Istanbul Provincial Organization co-chair Erdal Avcı made the first speech and emphasized that these arbitrary detentions are intended to prevent the regular work of HDP.

Avcı added: "We do not accept these practices. If living conditions in this country are to be maintained, the minimum universal law must be applied and should not be violated."

Müslüm Kocaoğlu, a lawyer of the Platform for Freedom of Lawyers (ÖHP), said that his clients who were detained on 8 November 2019 were held in custody for 4 days and then were given an additional 4 days.

Kocaoğlu confirmed that his clients were tortured while in custody and said they would make a criminal complaint against the police.
