HDP: We will bring those responsible for Soma mine massacre to justice

The Peoples 'Democracy Party (HDP) commemorated the 301 miners who lost their lives in the coal mine massacre in Soma seven years ago and said: "We will bring those responsible to justice.”

In a written statement, HDP Labor Commission deputy co-chair Şaziye Köse said: “The peoples of Turkey faced the massacre in Soma exactly seven years ago. It was and is a suffering impossible to describe.” Köse reminded that in this massacre, remembered as the "Soma Massacre", 301 workers lost their lives as a result of the “partnership between the government and capital.”

Köse added: “For the past seven years, the government has refrained from bringing to justice those responsible for the massacre. It never changed its attitude, avoiding its own responsibility. For the government, the understanding of ending exploitation and keeping the worker alive never developed. Thousands of workers die every year in work-related killings. The capital continued to exploit, the government continued to watch over capital. The AKP period witnessed a series of massacres which spread over time for the working class. With its pro-capital attitude, the government preferred to be a direct partner in every massacre.

We kept our anger alive. We defended our rights against capital-power partnership with solidarity. Because for us, the massacres of workers, especially the Soma Massacre, are not "fate", not "nature". These massacres took place as a result of preferred policies and continue to occur.”

Köse continued: “We will never forget the Soma Massacre and will not allow it to be forgotten. We will continue our struggle against those who want to make the Soma Massacre disappearing and suppress the pursuit of rights by prolonging the judicial process. Because, for us, getting justice for the Soma Massacre is a reason for existence.

We remember the lives of the 301 workers we lost in the seventh anniversary of the Soma Massacre, and we repeat our promise that we will grow our struggle until those responsible will be brought to justice.”
