Historic resistance in Strasbourg on the 46th day

The indefinite hunger strike in Strasbourg has reached day 46.

KCDK-E co-chair Yüksel Koç, former MP Dilek Öcalan, journalist Gülistan İke, political scientist Kardo Bokani and politician Mustafa Sarıkaya are part of the 14-strong team of activists on hunger strike demanding the end of  isolation against the Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan.

Health condition of hunger strikers

After activist Kerem Solhan was taken to the hospital for diagnosis, hunger strikers are said to be in a stable condition despite the serious symptoms experienced.

Many of the hunger strikers show many problems related to excessive weight loss, such as muscle weakness, fatigue, some heart and pulse rhythms problems, abnormalities in sugar level.

The hunger strikers are visited by hundreds of people every day and continue to meet visitors despite this too could be a problem for their health.

Following the health situation of the activists is Doctor Fahrettin Gülsen. He said in a statement that in fact weaker hunger strikers should not be in touch with visitors.

However Dr Gülşen also underlined that visitors are also playing a very positive role on the morale of hunger strikers.

According to the latest tests conducted on Monday, the health condition see as risky are that of Yüksel Koç, Kerem Solhan, Ayvaz Ece, Gülistan Ike and Ekrem Yılmaz.

Visitors pouring into Strasbourg

Since the start of the hunger strike on 17 December, dozens of Kurdistan and Turkish institutions in Europe, as well as a number of executives visited hunger strikers.

Among those who visited the activists were the executives of the Kurdistan Islamic Party (PIK), as well as the executives of the European Democratic Kurdish Community Congress (KCDK-E), and the umbrella organization of the Kurdish institutions in Europe, KNK, Kongra-Gel.

In addition, the Kurdistan Islamic Community (CIK), Demorkatic Alevi Federation (FEDA) and Yazidi institutions, NAV-YEK, Shengal Diaspora Assembly and the Assyrian-Syriac people organisations also visited and supported the resistance against isolation.

European politicians against isolation

The attitude of the hundreds of European politicians towards isolation was also remarkable. Dozens of MEPs and members of the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) also organised actions to support hunger strikers.

In addition, national and regional MPs from numerous left, communist and ecologist parties in Europe declared themselves opposed to isolation. Among them were France Insoummise, executive and deputy Jean-Luc Mélenchon, and dozens of left deputies.

While Mélenchon raised the issue of isolation several times in the National Assembly, Laurence Cohen, a communist senator, came to Strasbourg to convey his message of support with the resistance.

Swedish Left Party MP Momodou Malcolm Jallow and German Die Linke Hamburg State deputy, Martin Dolzer, were among the supporters of the resistance in Strasbourg.

Visits on Thursday

On the 46th day of hunger strike, dozens of Kurds from Germany, France and Switzerland visited the activist.

These visits lead to very emotional moments. The President of Germany Giessen People's Assembly co-chair Gift Acar, was with hunger strikers and commended their action and asked the international community to act and break the silence surrounding this resistance.

Activists from Bremen, Bodensee, Zurich and Alsace region also visited the hunger strikers.
