A skull and some human bones have been discovered during an excavation in Dumlupýnar Neighborhood of Tatvan /Bitlis. IHD pointed out the bones indicate the presence of a mass grave in the area which was used as a military area for many years in 90s.
The skull and bones were discovered by Yakup Þeflekçi who was making excavations to build a house in the area. Following the preliminary scene examinations by police and gendarmerie units, it was found out that the skull and bones were human remains. The prosecutor of Tatvan launched an investigation into the discovered bones which were sent to Forensic Medicine Institution.
Human Rights Association (IHD) Bitlis Chair Hasan Ceylan and MEYA-DER Executive Nihat Oruç also made an examination in the area and gathered information from the prosecutor and eye witnesses.
Making a statement after the examination, IHD Chair Hasan Ceylan pointed to the high suspicion of a new mass grave in the area which, he underlined, was held under a strict military control in the past.
By means of the confessions by some JITEM (Gendarmerie Intelligence and Anti-Terror Unit)members and village guards who were involved in illegal affairs in Bitlis, Tatvan and Mutki in 90s, we have ascertained around 350-400 mass graves so far and we have no doubt that the bones found here today are a part of an undiscovered mass grave in this area. We will take all necessary steps to expose the truths behind these bones and to not to allow these truths be covered up, added Ceylan.
