Human shields heading towards border

Last week was a week of protest against Iran's invasion of the Federal Kurdish Region. Many cities held demonstration: Urfa, Mersin and Þýrnak’s districts Hezex (Ýdil), Diyarbakýr and Cizre.

Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Cizre District chair, Ahmet Elçi, announced that a group of people have left Þýrnak heading towards the Iran-Iraq border to act as human shields.

Protesters carried pictures of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan and PKK advance guard leader Mahsum Korkmaz, along with Democratic Confederation flags. They were constantly chanting slogans such as “Martyrs are immortal,” “Down with Iran,” and “PKK is the people, the people are here.”

At the end of the marches, protesters gave speeches alleging that Turkey and Iran are acting in tandem in this ‘extensive occupation attempt.’

At the end of the protest march in Cizre, Elçi gave a speech and encouraged protesters to join the human shields leaving for the Iran-Iraq border tomorrow.

“Kurds live with massacre and genocide. By staying quiet, [National and international opinion] are accomplices to this crime” said women attending the mass women’s protest in Diyarbakýr.

At the protest, Mukaddes Alataþ, coordinator of the Kardelen (Snowdrop) Women’s House, gave a speech saying, “All states have to say ‘stop’ to this attack because what is happening to the Kurdish people today will happen to them tomorrow. They must not ignore it. For everyone, for the families of both the guerrillas and the soldiers, the sole hope is peace. However, what is happening now is undermining peace. Everyone must examine their consciousnesses and respond to this situation. Those who are associated with this crime and the perpetrators of this crime should end it immediately.”

Gülbahar Örmek, coordinator of the Women’s Support Center (KADEM) said that, in a place of war and suffering, women and children are most affected. She also said that other countries must put pressure on Iran, rather than remaining silent.

Türkan Turan, manager of the Diyarbakýr Municipality Women’s and Family Branch, said that Turkey’s dialogue with Iranian officials resulted in the cross-border operations, and that other countries’ silence is an ominous sign.
