The Human Rights Association (ÝHD) Diyarbakýr branch published a report on the prisons in eastern and southeastern Turkey for the year 2011. The report underlined that 1,453 rights violations have been exposed in prisons. In addition the report stated that 256 seriously ill prisoners are kept behind bars prisons. ÝHD Diyarbakýr secretary Raci Bilici said the rights violations are continuing despite constantly being brought to the attention of the relevant institutions, like the Ministry of Justice.
“The state, and in particular the Ministry of Justice - said Bilici - has the primary responsibility when it comes to rights violations. The latest example is Pozantý prison. No proceedings were carried out despite for two years we have been exposing and fight against the inhuman treatment in the Pozantý prison”.
According to the report, 13 ill prisoners have died in prison in 2011 due to the State’s neglect and lack of treatment. Currently 256 seriously ill prisoners are in jail. Of these 106 are on the verge of death because suffering from terminal illnesses.
The ÝHD demanded the immediate release of the seriously ill prisoners as well as of the children jailed under the Anti-Terror Law (TMK).
The report stated four injuries, 147 cases of torture, 133 violations of health rights, 70 cases of isolation and eight cases of mother tongue ban in prison in the region.
Raci Bilici also demanded an end to the isolation of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan and said demands of prisoners currently on hunger strike should be listened.
The statistical figures of violations of rights experienced in prisons in the region for the year 2011 are;
