ILPS demands end to political repression in Turkey

The International Coordinating Committee (ICC) of the International League of Peoples' Struggle (ILPS) has passed a resolution during its meeting last March 10-11, 2012 in Utrecht. Members from North America, Latin America, Asia and Africa attended the meeting. The resolution states the firm support of the ILPS to the demands of the 400 political prisoners for the release of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan, the right to education in the mother language and an end to repression by the Turkish state.

Here the full text of the resolution:

The International League of Peoples' Struggle (ILPS) extends its militant solidarity and support to the more than 400 political prisoners who are on hunger strike in sixteen (16) prisons in Turkey and Kurdistan who are demanding freedom for the Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Ocalan, the right to education in their mother language and an end to political repression and military operations by the Turkish government against the Kurdish people.

Among the hunger strikers are Peace and Democracy (BDP) MPs Selma Irmak and Faysal Sariyildiz who were elected to the Turkish Parliament in the June 2011 elections but were imprisoned on charges of being members of the PKK. There are more than 8,000 political prisoners in Turkish prisons affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and the Kurdistan Women's Freedom Party (PAJK).

The ILPS firmly supports the right of the Kurdish people to self-determination. The ILPS condemns the policy of the Turkish state to deny the Kurdish people of their social, economic, political and cultural rights. The ILPS denounces the use of force in suppressing the legitimate struggle of the Kurdish people including such measures as mass arrests, assassinations, bombings of civilian communities and massacres.

We call on member organizations of the ILPS and all people of goodwill to issue statements of solidarity and carry out appropriate actions to support the 400 Kurdish political prisoners on hunger strike whose action is part of the over-all struggle of the Kurdish people to claim their legitimate rights as a people.
