The residents of Kobanê will celebrate this year’s Newroz on the slopes of Mishtenur hill, which saw violent clashes during the resistance in the city. The Newroz fire will be lit on the top of the hill. The people will decorate the streets of Kobanê on 21 March with pictures of those who fell during the fighting, and people from Suruç will flock to the border to greet Newroz.

Kobanê, which became known all over the world for its historic resistance against ISIS gangs, is preparing to crown its victory by celebrating Newroz on 21 March. The programme is almost complete. The first Newroz fire in 107 towns where Newroz is being organised by the DTK, HDP and BDP is to be lit in Suruç, which supported the resistance in Kobanê for months. The celebration to take place today will be in the village of Etmenek on the border, and the Newroz flames will warm Kobanê.

People from Kobanê will go to the Kaniya Kurda neighbourhood to greet the celebration on the other side of the border. On 21 March the people of Kobanê will light their own Newroz fire on Mishtenur Hill, and celebrate the victory over the ISIS gangs.

Newroz Organising Committee member Ahmet Şêxo explained the importance of Newroz for Kobanê.

Ahmet Şexo said they had invited all the people to go to the border to greet the Newroz celebration taking place in the village of Etmenek in North Kurdistan, and that it was highly significant for them that the celebration was taking place there, where there had been a border vigil since the start of the resistance.

He said the celebration in Kobanê would have a particular poignancy, on account of the historic resistance that had taken place.

Şexo said they had taken special care to ensure the celebrations went off without a hitch, adding that people from Heyva Sor a Kürdistan (Kurdistan Red Crescent) would also be present.

Streets to be festooned with photos of fallen fighters

The streets of Kobanê are to be festooned with red, green and yellow, with flags and with the pictures of fighters who fell during the resistance. Şexo said there woulod be surprise guests at the celebration, without divulgng names.

‘Öcalan’s message is important for the whole Middle East’

Şexo added that 2015 was an important year for all Kurds, not just for Kobanê, saying: “We hope all peoples will ensure that the dove of peace released by Abdullah Öcalan [2 years ago] reaches its goal. Mr Öcalan's message to the Amed Newroz will hopefully lead to peace and freedom for all the peoples of the Middle East.”
