Commenting the resignation of Turkey's four most senior military commanders last week as unlikely to create a major crisis, Bloomberg remarked that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan is strengthening his control exercise over the country.
Goldman Sachs Group Inc.analysts, including Clemens Grafe and Ahmet Akarlý, reported that the civil society structures in Turkey are currently under a consolidation, which helps to strengthen the democracy in the country.
Pointing out that the government will quickly fill the current vacancies and the ones to come with protest resignations and to avoid the rising of a “full-blown political crisis" from a “political noise”, the analysts said; “What is happening here is basically that the ruling party is making it clear that the army, by constitution, is accountable before the civilian authorities.”
Last Friday, Turkey's top general, Isik Kosaner, along with the country's navy, army and air force commanders announced their resignation after Kosaner's meeting with the Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Abdullah Gül earlier on Friday. The discussed points of the meetings were several key appointments during next week's, scheduled for August, high military council meeting which will discuss promotions of the senior military officers.
Chief of General Staff General Isik Kosaner stated in a farewell message to "brothers in arms" that he will no more be able to continue his job while being unable to defend the rights of persons who were imprisoned as a result of an inaccurate judicial process. The tension between the army and the government had been standing for some time due to the detention of more than 40 generals and tens of military officers on charges of planning a coup to take the control of the country and due to a disagreement between two sides about the promotion of detained military officers whom the government proposed retirement.
While Gendarmerie General Command Gen. Necdet Özel has already been appointed as the commander of land forces and the proxy Chief of General Staff, the Supreme Military Council (YAS) meeting began today to make the appointments.
