Iranian general reportedly killed in Syria

A general in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was reportedly killed in Syria on Monday.

A senior member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard’s Ground Force was killed in Syria in the early hours of Monday, according to Iranian state media.

Abolfazl Alijani was killed while serving as a “military adviser” in the country, according to Iran International, a news outlet identified with Iran’s political opposition.

The Iran International reported that Alijani, who came from Isfahan, was not a member of the IRGC's elite Quds Force that concentrates on extraterritorial operations, but rather a member of the ordinary ground forces.

Calling him a ‘martyr,’ the state media said his body is to be transferred to Iran in the coming days for his funeral.

Iran supports the government of Damascus in the Syrian civil war and deploys "military advisers" to the war-torn country.

Earlier in August, ceremonies were held in Tehran and many other cities in memory of five members of the Revolutionary Guard Corps. It is reported that the soldiers in question died a few years ago and their bodies were found and buried after DNA tests.

In March, the Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that two of its officers had died in an Israeli attack in Syria, warning Israel that they would "pay for this crime".

In recent years, Israel has carried out numerous attacks against the Lebanese Hezbollah and pro-Iranian forces in Syria.
