Istanbul citizens angry at endless increase in service prices

The destructive policies of the economic crisis of the ruling party in Turkey continue to hurt people who see their pockets emptied at any new policy.

As suicide cases increased together with growing unemployment, citizens who lost the buying power of their wages becuase of the high inflation are now in serious problems as they hardly manage to take home bread in the evening.

Increases in electricity, water and natural gas bills were joined by an increase of a 35 percent to transport. The increase was decided by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) and prompted the angry reactions of citizens who find it hard to meet ends.

Melek Şahin and Melek Kırhan, two women from Istanbul are among those citizens who protested the increase in transport prices.

Retired Melek Şahin told ANF: "They are officially messing us around."

54-year-old Şahin said said she had been working since she was 15 and now finds it hard to take bread home.

She said that her spouse, who is a construction worker, is not working at the moment, Şahin added that the entire burden of the house fells on her. "Will I pay electricity or natural gas with my pension? While my house was mortgaged so we could get a loan from the bank, the increase on transport prices fell on us."

Şahin said that this increase in transport at a time where people are literally finding hard to get bread on the table, is totally unfair.

Reminding the electoral slogan used by Istanbul mayor Ekren Imamoğlu - "Everything will be fine" - Şahin asked: "How will the mayor meet ends should he live have only the minimum wage to live on? I ask the same to President Erdogan, how will he get along with the minimum wage? It will not be sunshines and puppy dogs!"

Just like Melek Şahin, Melek Kırhan she is also retired. "I am retired and cannot get along".

Kırhan, 60-year-old, noted that she paid a full 950 TL natural gas bill last month. How can I pay for transport?"

Kırhan added: "We really do not know what to do. Our slogan today is not 'Everything will be fine' but 'We want a human life'."

Kırhan said people should not remain silent and added: "I do not tolerate more silence because I am hungry. They officially encourage the people to rebel. An empire of fear is being imposed on us. But fear has no use when you are in danger. We are sinking, let's not leave the boat, let's go hand in hand and let's stop this trend."
