Istanbul peace demonstration attacked by police-UPDATE

Today is International Peace Day. In Istabul the demonstration organized in Kadýköy (on the Asian side of the city) to ask for peace has been violently attacked by the police. Tear gas canisters have been thrown by police at the peaceful demonstrators. Only last week a young councillor, Yildirim Ayhan, was killed by the security forces at a demonstration by the Peace Mothers organized at the border to call for an end to air strikes.

Considering that the police was continuing to attack the peaceful demonstrators in Kadýköy the organizers have decided to call an earlier end to the meeting. Already several people had sustained injuries because of the police attack.

The meeting had been organized by BDP, ESP, EMEP, Socialist Parti, EDP, SODAP, KESK, Peace Mothers and many others.

The meeting was attended by BDP Ýstanbul deputy Sebahat Tuncel and Labour, Democracy and Freedom Block Ýstanbul deputy Abdullah Levent Tüzel.
