The KONGRA-GEL Co-Presidency Council released a statement on the occasion of Newroz (Kurdish New Year) on 21 March.

KONGRA-GEL wished Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan and the peoples a happy Newroz and commemorated with gratitude and respect the contemporary Kawa, Mazlum Doğan, Zekiye, Rahşan, Ronahî, Bêrîvan and all Newroz martyrs who set their bodies on fire and turned Newroz into a symbol of resistance and freedom.

The statement said: “We welcome the Newroz of 2025 with Leader Apo's [Abdullah Öcalan’s] call for 'Peace and Democratic Society', which is the manifesto of the century. We sincerely share the excitement of our people and friends in Kurdistan and abroad who welcome the 2025 Newroz with enthusiasm as the Newroz of freedom based on Leader Apo's freedom.

With his call of the century, Leader Abdullah Öcalan removed the reasons for the terror bracket, which is the result of the genocide policies based on a hundred years of denial and extermination, and brought the democratic solution of the Kurdish question to the agenda of the Middle East and international politics.

The positive effects of the leader's call were immediately evident. A new process has begun between the Autonomous Administration and the Damascus Administration in Syria. The key to the solution to the crisis, chaos and destruction in Syria is the Rojava revolution, which is the address of the democratic social unity of peoples and beliefs.

In this sense, our peoples and friends for peace and democracy should welcome this Newroz as the Newroz of freedom of Leader Apo and mobilize in all areas to organize a democratic society.

The forces of democracy must lead this process with solution projects. The main priority for the development of this process is the urgent establishment of Leader Apo's freedom and working conditions. This is the main issue that will build up trust in the development of the process.

With the public opinion to be molded under the leadership of civil society organizations, intellectuals, women and all forces in favor of democracy and peace, pressure must be put on the parliament and political parties. The necessary work for the freedom of Leader Apo and the legal guarantee of the İmralı talks must be carried out as a priority.

We call on our people and friends to participate strongly in the Newroz celebrations in all areas in order to respond to Leader Apo's call for “Peace and Democratic Society” and we say ‘Happy Newroz’.”
