Kurdish Guerrillas stop actions over Ramadan Feast - UPDATE

The HPG (People's Defense Forces) has announced yesterday that it will halt all the actions over the three days Ramadan Feast period, beginning on 30 August.

In a press release the Kurdish guerrillas assess the current situation and motivates its decision.

"Our command headquarters - says the press release - have decided there will be no action taken by our HPG forces unless they are attacked throughout the three days of the Ramadan festivities, which is the most spiritually important time for our people and the Islamic world, so that these days can be cherished in peace".

Assessing the current political situation the Kurdish guerrillas state that "Our Freedom Movement has made great efforts and sacrifices in order for the Kurdish question to be resolved through democratic means. However the response of the Turkish Republic was to activate an all-out annihilation concept in return for all our no-action decisions."

Pointing out the ongoing harassment of the Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan by the authorities the statement underlines that "The lawyer-client consultations with our leader have not been allowed since 27 July 2011 and there has been continuous air strikes using all the destructive techniques they have of the Media Defense Areas since 17 August 2011. In these attacks 3 guerrillas and 7 civilians of which 4 of them were children; a total of ten people have been martyred."

The statement also underlines that "In the face of AKP's all-out attacks the HPG (People's Defense Forces) has taken up the necessary action based on legitimate defense. It is clear that the all-out attacks of the AKP shall not be left unanswered. The army and government of the Turkish Republic make use of Islam and exploit peoples' beliefs when it suits them and implement barbaric practices."
