Kurdish mothers appeal to Turkish mothers for peace

In the south and southeast regions of Turkey, where armed clashes and deaths continue without pause, Kurdish mothers issued an appeal to Turkish mothers for unity and peace.

One of the mothers calling for peace and unity is 70 year-old Hacer Öztürk. She spoke to DIHA News Agency at the weekend. One of her sons, Sýddýk Öztürk, a member of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), lost his life in a clash on July 22 in Þemdinli, while another son is serving in the military. Mother Öztürk said, “Every day I lived in fear of my sons meeting in a clash. Mothers of soldiers and mothers of guerillas should say ‘no’ to war.”

Öztürk continued, “Absolutely no president or prime minister can know my pain and the pain of my sons. While one of my sons joined the PKK, another was doing his compulsory military service. I couldn’t sleep at night because I was so afraid of my sons meeting in a clash. I am screaming at the Prime Minister and all government officials: Stop this dirty war that makes brothers kill each other. We don’t want to see our children’s bodies. If you don’t prevent the deaths of our children, I too will go to the mountains [to join the PKK], in spite of my age.”

“Casualties during clashes between Turkish Military Forces (TSK) and PKK are not only Kurdish but also Turkish soldiers. I’m calling out to all mothers of soldiers. A mother’s pain makes no distinction. Let’s come together and stand against this dirty war” marked mother Öztürk.

While mothers were reacting against the war, news of casualties continued coming.

Soldier Mustafa Bulut, 22, from Kayseri, has been reported killed in a clash between the Turkish Military and members of the PKK in the village of Beyyurdu (Bêdevê) in Hakkari’s Þemdinli province. While Bulut’s body was brought to the Hakkari Military Hospital today, the operations in the region continue.

Also, a body of PKK member who were killed in another clash in Þemdinli’s countryside remain in the Van Training and Research Hospital waiting for autopsy.
