200 Kurdish prisoners began a hunger strike in prison in Aleppo city of Syria. The prisoners who weren’t released despite the general amnesty stated that imprisonment conditions are getting worse.

According to information received, 200 Kurdish prisoners in Mislimiye prison have been on a hunger strike since July 15.

Making a statement on behalf of Initiative for Families of Detainees, Mehmed Osman notified that prisoners are protesting against the prison’s worsening conditions.

Concerning the strike, Osman said the following; “The prison authorities told Kurdish detainees that the amnesty general declared by the Syrian President took them in as well. However, none of these Kurdish prisoners has been released for three months, since the proclamation of the general amnesty. In addition to being held in custody, the prisoners told us that they are exposed to ill-treatment, while sick prisoners aren’t even treated.”

According to Osman, the prisoners, who are determined to continue the hunger strike until the prison circumstances are leveled up, want to gain their liberation.

Although an unexceptional general amnesty has been declared two times since March 15, the beginning of the uprising in Syria, it is seen that the general amnesties, declared by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on 31 May and 21 June, are not rightly applied in practice.
