Kurdish soldier had been driven to commit suicide

Soldier Osman Telli committed suicide on March 10, 2007 while he was doing his compulsory military service at Isparta Infantry Training Brigade 2nd Battalion. Apparently the suicide was motivated by his being constantly insulted by his superiors.

Military Court, writes DIHA News Agency, has now established that Telli's superiors are guilty of having kept Telli on duty allowing him to keep his gun even though his suicidal attitude was clear. Subsequently the same court sentenced the Ministry Defense to pay 45,950 TL to deceased soldier’s family.

One of the commander, Tolga Genç, is said to have been slapping Telli, for watching Kurdish dvd, another one beat, insulted and dismissed him from his duty in front of his friends, and another commander forced him to say that ‘We are an idiot team, we are pinhead, we are idiots,” and then beat and kicked him for saying these; Those are some of examples what he faced during his military service.

Telli family does not believe the suicide allegation as suspicious deaths of Kurdish soldiers are worryingly increasing. According to the family, military tries to silence them by giving this money which is impossible to compare with their son’s life.

The Family will continue the legal struggle against military court’s conviction.
