Kurdish speaking prisoners tortured

Prisoners in Iskenderun Type M Closed Prison who were attacked for speaking Kurdish were beaten after having cold water thrown at them.

Prisoners in the Iskenderun Type M Prison had been attacked last month for speakig Kurdish.

The prisoners were issued communication bans and called for awareness through their families.

One of their families said: "They are insulted by the guards every minute already. Before this they had been battered for speaking Kurdish. Now they threw cold water at them and beat them like that. All prisoners in the ward have been battered in this manner. They took away the prisoners who objected and put them in solitary confinement, to beat them there separately."

The prisoners took medical reports documenting the battery and pressed charges, but were told by the prison prosecutor said, "There is no evidence that you were tortured. How do I know you're not lying? So there is nothing I can do." Prisoners said the battery reports were not inspected by the prosecutor, and called on the public for solidarity.

Two members of the prisoners' families appealed to the Mardin Human Rights Association (İnsan Hakları Derneği - İHD) and requested legal aid.
