Kurdish activists have been staging a sit-in protest in front of the UN Geneva Office since January 25 to demand freedom for Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan and to draw attention to the massive hunger strikes by political prisoners in protest at isolation and severe violations of rights in Turkish prisons. The activists resume their protest in a tent they set up in front of the UN Geneva Office every Wednesday.
In a symbolic action, they turned their backs on the UN building again this week to protest the UN ignorance and silence on isolation and Turkey’s occupation offensive in Medya Defense Zones in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq).
Geneva Democratic Kurdish Society co-chair Salih Sağlam spoke after a minute’s silence in memory of martyrs, saying the following: “In response to the all-out attacks against the leader of the Kurdish people and against Kurdistan, we will claim the “Time for Freedom” campaign everywhere we are and continue to protest in the streets. Standing with the guerrilla resistance and the prison resistance against occupation and isolation, we will enhance the struggle and carry it to victory.”
Following the speeches, the activists continued their protest with slogans demanding freedom for Öcalan against isolation.
