Kurds take the city of Afrin in Syria

Kurdish people in West Kurdistan seized power in the city of Afrin in Syria on Friday, one day after they took the control of all government institutions in the city of Kobani.

Committees for civil defense raided and seized all offices of the Baas regime in the city of Afrin and the district of Cidêris as of early morning hours.

Speaking to ANF about the action of seziure in Kobali on Thursday, Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) co-chair Saleh Muslim Mohammed pointed out that the acts of seizure have been carried out to not to allow clashes in the country to spread into the Kurdish region.

On the other hand, committees for civil defense which announced yesterday that they hold themselves responsible for ensuring security in Kurdish regions have declared their group as “People’s Defense Unions (YPG)”.

YPG General Executive Committee released a written statement on Friday to announce that defense associations have been formed across the whole West Kurdistan region. The statement noted that YPG supported the Hewler Agreement which was signed by People’s Assembly (Meclîsa Gel) and Kurdish National Council (Encumena Nîþtîmanî ya Kurdî li Sûriyeyê-ENKS) early July to ensure the unity of Kurds in West Kurdistan.

The YPG statement ended calling on both organizations for support.
