The severe isolation imposed by the occupying Turkish state on Kurdish people’s leader Abdullah Öcalan continues. The Turkish state, which prevents Öcalan from meeting with his family and lawyers, violates many international conventions such as the Geneva’s one. Although the international community remains silent about this crime, the Kurdish people try to expose this unlawful situation everywhere.
Evaluating the issue, Jazira Canton Lawyers Union Serêkaniyê co-chair Hesen Misot said: “People detained in prisons have rights under international and local laws throughout the world. Turkey is not an exception: even there, prisoners have rights according to the laws of the Turkish state. But Turkey is violating both its own laws as well as international laws. When a person is first arrested, he/she may not be allowed to meet with anyone, and this is in order not to damage the investigation process. However, later on, everyone has the right to meet with lawyers and family."
Noting that Öcalan's case is not a case against an individual, Misto said, “This case is the case of the Kurds whose people have been usurped. They are trying to crush the Kurdish people. This is a crime under local and international law. Öcalan represents the Kurdish people. This isolation is applied to the entire Kurdish people. The Turkish government want to prevent Öcalan's thoughts from reaching the Kurdish people.”
Recalling that the CPT has reported the violation of the Turkish state, Misto added that despite this, the Turkish state aggravates the isolation. Misto addressed the CPT and said that the crimes committed by the Turkish state should be exposed.
