Lawyers: Imralı prisoners spoke to their families by phone

The families of Imralı prisoners have been granted a phone call with their relatives.

The Istanbul based Asrın Law Office released a written statement and said that their clients in Imralı Island Prison have spoken to their families by phone.

According to the statement, Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş have talked on the phone with their families today, April 27th.

The phone talk has taken place through the prosecutor’s offices in the cities where the families live.

The regular requests for visits by the Asrin Legal Office have not been answered by the Public Prosecutor's Office since 7 August 2019.

Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan’s brother Mehmet Öcalan was last able to visit his brother on 2 March following massive public pressure.

Ömer Hayri Konar and Veysi Aktaş were able to meet with their relatives on 5 June, 12 August 2019 and 2 March 2020. They had not seen their relatives since 15 March 2015.

Hamili Yıldırım was able to meet with his family only on 5 June and 12 August 2019 but not on 2 March 2020 because his brother was ill.

The tightly guarded prison island of Imrali is completely sealed off from the public, but there is a risk of infection with the novel coronavirus from the guards and prison staff who commute between the island and the mainland.
