Human bones were found during restoration works in an area in Diyarbakýr which was used as interrogation and execution place between the years of 1993 and 1999 by JITEM (Gendarmerie Intelligence and Anti-Terror Unit).
Announcing privacy decision on the event, the prosecutor remarked that the number of bones could increase.
The area where former Diyarbakýr Courthouse, Gendarmerie Central Command and Central Closed Prison were located was evacuated and assigned to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 1999.
While the workers in the area immediately informed police about the discovery of bones, Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into the event. Excavated human bones were put in sacks and taken to Forensic Medicine Institution of Diyarbakýr.
Coming to the scene following the discovery of bones, Human Rights Association (IHD) Branch Secretary Raci Bilici stated that the bones belonged to bodies that were casually buried in the area. Reminding that relatives of disappeared people had earlier applied to IHD demanding excavation in the historical Ýç Kale area, Bilici noted that they would follow hard after the event.
Bilici added that IHD would also apply to Chief Public Prosecutor's Office for a more detailed investigation and excavation in the area.
