Following the coup attempt of July 15 in Turkey, the Kurds are worried about the conditions Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan imprisoned in İmralı island is under and demand he be allowed to see his family and lawyers at once. For this, a series of campaigns have been launched by Kurds, mainly throughout Kurdistan and Turkey. The Kurdish institutions launching the campaigns demand information about Öcalan’s condition. The KCDK-E (European Kurdish Democratic Society Congress), the largest institution of Kurds in Europe with 250 associations and other institutions, has launched a letter writing campaign addressing to the CPT and Amnesty International for an international committee to visit the Kurdish leader in İmralı. KCDK-E Co-chair Yüksel Koç called upon all Kurds living in Europe to send letters to the Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT).
KCDK-E Co-chair Yüksel Koç said they couldn’t get any information on Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan and continued: “The Kurds should take to the streets from now on and raise hell. Because Öcalan is our red line. We can’t be ordinary, mediocre or negligent. This will put us in a situation of historic mistake. That is why our social centers need to be standing up en masse. We have also prepared files for diplomatic work. Our social centers should take these files and visit the political parties, NGOs, the CPT, Amnesty International and others to demand an international committee visit Öcalan.”
Stating that they will be writing letters to CPT and AI all over Europe, Koç said: “In this folder, we have one letter each for the CPT and Amnesty International. Kurds should give these to the Amnesty International representatives in their cities. For the CPT, everybody can send in this letter via fax, e-mail and post. Because in this matter, CPT is the respondent. So, we need to send tens of thousands of letters in a couple of days. So CPT will make a statement on Öcalan. All community centers should go into action.”
KCDK-E Co-chair Koç added they will be on the streets with various demonstrations for Öcalan all over Europe, starting with Germany.
