More people join indefinite hunger strike

A group of people have started hunger strike in the province of Muþ to demand the removal of the isolation regime imposed on PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan and ending of military and political operations.

In a statement before the hunger strike, which includes BDP executives and Muþ TUHAD-DER, union president Gýyasettin Kýrtan pointed out to ongoing hunger strikes which - he said - voice the same demand in many different places. Kýrtan said that; “As known by the public opinion, the isolation regime imposed on Kurdish people’s leader Abdullah Öcalan has left 243 days behind. All segments that side with peace and democracy, the Kurdish people in particular, have been watching these practices with a great concern. Dialogue and negotiations were also suspended as a result of these completely arbitrary and political decisions that cannot be explained on the basis of any legal reason.”

Kýrtan noted that the AKP government insisted on operations instead of searching for peaceful and democratic solutions to the Kurdish problem and continued as follows; “What the government needs to do is to start and continue negotiations with Mr. Öcalan to ensure an honorable peace which is the common demand of all sensitive segments, particularly the Kurdish people who insist on peace. More and more people are leaving their bodies to death in indefinite and nonalternate hunger strikes in prisons for 40 days. Families of prisoners are watching the process with a great concern as the number of strikers is expected to reach ten thousands.”

Reminding that 24 political prisoners in Muþ E Typ Closed Prison have gone on an indefinite and nonalternate hunger strike as of 25 March, Kýrtan added that strike actions will continue unless a peaceful and democratic solution is ensured for the Kurdish problem. Kýrtan also called on the public opinion to support the hunger strikes staged on a democratic and peaceful ground.
