HDP MP Ömer Öcalan: Abdullah Öcalan should be contacted immediately

HDP Urfa MP Ömer Öcalan denounced the unlawful isolation imposed on Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan amidst allegations that he has died in prison.

People’s Democratic Party (HDP) MP Ömer Öcalan submitted a petition to the Ministry of Justice, stating that his party is concerned about the health status of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan.

The petition submitted by Ömer Öcalan includes the following:

"As his family, we are unable to communicate in any way with Mr. Abdullah Öcalan, who remains in Imralı High Security F-Type Prison. The last lawyer meeting at Imralı Prison was held on 7 August 2019. Although there is no legal obstacle, he was allowed to speak to his family on phone only once during the last 21 years of imprisonment. His last communication with the outside world was through a phone call on April 27, 2020, which was enabled because of the pandemic conditions. After this date, neither his family nor his lawyers could hear from him in any way. On 14.03.2021 various anonymous social media accounts put forward allegations that raised concern over his life.

Despite all legal attempts, Mr. Öcalan is unlawfully denied the right to meet with his lawyers and his family. The hunger strikes initiated by political prisoners in Turkey’s prisons in order to end the isolation imposed on Mr. Öcalan and to open up communication channels, have reached a critical stage. For all the mentioned reasons, we demand the implementation of a regime that establishes his fundamental rights just like every detainee. Any meeting ban on Mr. Abdullah Öcalan should be lifted as soon as possible. We also demand that the allegations about his health and living conditions be clarified and the concerns arising as a result of be relieved.”
