A Newroz celebration took place in Hamburg on Saturday. People from all four parts of Kurdistan and some internationalists took part in the open-air event in Fischmarkt. The area was decorated with colorful flags and pictures of martyrs.
The celebration began with a minute of silence for the martyrs of the Kurdish liberation struggle. Zübeyde Zümrüt, co-chair of the Kurdish umbrella organization KON-MED, was invited as a guest speaker. In her speech, Zümrüt elaborated on the significance of Newroz and said that on Newroz 2022, the people of Kurdistan had once again made it clear that they would not accept life without Abdullah Öcalan. That was the message that came from the celebrations in Europe and Kurdistan, she said.
Another speech was given by former HDP deputy Selma Irmak. The Kurdish politician, now living in exile in Germany due to political persecution in Turkey, explained that despite massive repression, the Kurdish people had taught the rulers a lesson: "Whatever is done, this people will not be brought to its knees."
Ozan Aydın, Tuncer Yalınkılınç and Ozan Dilan performed in the music program. There was a lot of dancing. The celebration ended with a recited poem by Salih Farqîn.
