Newroz operation, fourteen people taken into custody
At least fourteen people have been taken into custody early on 10 April morning as a result of simultaneous police raids in many districts of Istanbul.
The operation targeted some people who joined this years Newroz celebrations in Istanbul, included ESP Provincial Chair and HDK Provincial Coordination Committee member Erdal Demirhan, Hasan Tunç, Socialist Party member and Provincial Chair Yiðit Yirmibeþ, members of Students Collective group, some other university students and ETHA news agency reporter Çaðdaþ Küçükbattal who monitored the Newroz events in Istanbul as a cameraman.
Detainees were taken to Security Directorate of Istanbul following medical examinations at Forensic Medicine Institute. The number of detainees is expected to increase.
Following the raids, ETHA news agency made a statement to condemn the detention of their reporter and said that;
We once again declare that we will determinedly continue the tradition of free press. Like we are doing today, we will continue to let the people have the truths.
