Ninety years prison sentence has been requested for three young members of the Socialist Democracy Party (SDP), Mersin branch. The three boys Ali Okutan (19), Dersim Dinçer (19) and Bedrettin Akdeniz (20) are accused of having celebrated Newroz Day “under instruction by the KCK (Kurdish Communities Union) organization”.
A specially authorized public prosecutor’s indictment against SDP members lists Kurdish songs and Facebook shares as evidence of the boys spreading propaganda for the KCK organization. Three students are also accused of throwing stones and molotov cocktails to police and causing material damage to public property during the Newroz celebrations in Mersin on 20 March.
Three boys who were taken into custody and released on 27 March were once again detained and sent to Mersin closed prison on 2 May after the prosecutor’s objection to their trial without arrest. Three SDP members were also imposed a pecuniary fine of 5,000 TL for each for distributing bulletin for the May Day.
The indictment against the jailed students also defends that the boys are members of the DEV-LÝS [organization of high school students] which is claimed to organize joint actions with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
Thirty years in prison is asked for each of three SDP members who are accused of being members and spreading propaganda of an illegal organization, keeping dangerous and unpermitted materials, resisting to security officers, intending to injury and damaging public property.
Bedrettin Akyüz who joined the Newroz celebration at Mersin University campus is separately claimed to have spread propaganda for PKK by dancing the halay [a traditional dance] in company with Kurdish songs.
