Police attack HDP's Justice Vigil in Ankara

Turkish police attacked the Justice Vigil launched by HDP in front of Sincan Prison in Ankara to support its jailed lawmaker Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu.

Despite successfully appealing against the revocation of his mandate before the Constitutional Court, Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, a deputy of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) who has been imprisoned for three months, remains in custody. The HDP therefore began a vigil in front of Sincan Prison in Ankara. Police attacked the vigil on Monday and used force to arrest the politician's son, Salih Gergerlioğlu, among others. Police also attacked journalists who were filming the attacks and confiscated their equipment. At least four people were taken into custody in the crackdown.

Last week, the Turkish Constitutional Court upheld a lawsuit filed by imprisoned HDP deputy Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu. According to the ruling, the politician's right to stand for election, his right to political activity and his personal right to freedom and security were violated. Gergerlioğlu had filed a lawsuit against the revocation of his deputy mandate.

The HDP politician and human rights activist had his parliamentary mandate revoked in March following a final conviction on "terror charges." He was forcibly removed from parliament by police and arrested at his home in early April. Since then he has been held in Sincan Prison in Ankara. The HDP demands the immediate implementation of the verdict and thus the release of the politician.
