President Gül to meet Block deputies delegation

President Abdullah Gül has met opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kýlýçdaroðlu at the Çankaya presidential palace for talks aimed to solve the crisis in Parliament, which has characterized the beginning of the ruling party's third term.

President Gül invited Turkey's main opposition party and Labor, Democracy and Freedom Block deputies to discuss possible solutions to the latest crisis. Kýlýçdaroðlu and Gül met at 11 a.m. at the Çankaya presidential palace in Ankara on Thursday. According to Kýlýçdaroðlu, the president expressed his concern at the situation.

“He said he also voiced his concerns about this issue before. He said he would contribute to a solution to the issue and that he would take my opinions into consideration,” Kýlýçdaroðlu added.

Gül will meet with Mardin independent deputy Ahmet Türk and Diyarbakýr independent deputy Þerafettin Elçi on Friday at 11:30 a.m.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan had talks with Gül in Ankara and received a mandate from the president to form the new government as the chairman of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), which secured 50 percent of the national vote in the June 12 elections.

Gül also invited Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli for talks, but the MHP leader immediately refused to meet, citing a “busy schedule.”

Selahattin Demirtaþ said that his group is "ready as always to listen to what the president has to say. We are not - he added - closing doors on dialogue".

Demirtaþ also said that “our demand is clear. If the Justice and Development Party passes a constitutional amendment and pledges to hold by-elections in Diyarbakýr, we would lend support to the government’s project to adopt a brand new constitution. But it does not seem that the AK Party is uneasy with the situation of Dicle and the other jailed deputies.”
