Prisoners’ families rally despite police blockade in Istanbul

Families of prisoners who are on hunger strike or death fast, continue their demonstrations in solidarity with their children who demand the end of the isolation of Abdullah Öcalan.

The massive hunger strike protest of the Kurds demanding the end of the isolation regime executed against Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan continues with resolve.

The hunger strike resistance, initiated by DTK Co-chair and HDP MP Leyla Güven while she was jailed in Amed Prison, was later joined by thousands of prisoners in Turkey and North Kurdistan as well as dozens of activists around the world. Currently there are 7 thousand prisoners on hunger strike and 30 of them have turned their hunger strike into death fast recently.

Families of the prisoners joining the fast have been taking to the streets in Turkey and North Kurdistan to urge the government of Turkey to end the isolation so the hunger strike and death fast protests come to an end before a loss of lives.

Families have once again marched to the Bakırköy Prison on Friday, joined by lawyers from the Association of Libertarian Lawyers (ÖHD), Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK) Co-spokesperson Gülistan Koçyiğit and Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) MP Züleyha Gülüm.

The families were confronted by the police as they approached the prison chanting “Bijî berxedana zindanan” (Long live the prison resistance).

Arguing that the demonstration was illegal, police showed the lawyers a decision regarding the ban issued for the demonstration. Lawyers said the decision was irregular and wanted to take a photo of the document, which was obstructed by the police.

Following discussions, the families started a sit-in action which was attacked by the police shortly after. During the attack, a prisoner’s relative shouted “No matter what you do, we will be here again tomorrow.”

Families then marched to Şirinevler Square chanting “We will resist to victory” and “Repression cannot intimidate us”.
