Protests against Afrin wall held in Zurich and Nicosia

Kurds living in Europe protested against the wall built by the occupying Turkish state in Afrin.

Protests against the wall built in Afrin by the occupying Turkish state were held in Switzerland and Cyprus.

Zurich

The ‘shame wall’ was condemned by an action in Zurich where Kurds gathered in Rathausbrücke and joined the rally promoted by the PYD Switzerland.

Banners writing ‘No to the occupation of Afrin’ and ‘No to the wall in Afrin’ were carried by activists along photos of Abdullah Öcalan and YPG and YPJ flags.

Speaking on behalf of PYD Switzerland in German, Abbas Omar said that the Turkish state, along with mercenary gangs, slaughtered civilians and plundered the city of Afrin.  “The occupying Turkish state wants to separate Afrin from the Syrian territory and add it to its territory. Kurds will stand against this invasion and plunder.”

Abbas Omar also reminded of the hunger strike resistance going on in prisons and many cities around the world demanding the end of isolation against Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan. He said that the action should be supported by everyone wherever they are.

Action in Nicosia

The Turkish invasion of Afrin and the building of the wall was also condemned in an action promoted by the PYD in Nicosia, Cyprus.

The demonstration was held in Ledra Square.

The event was attended by Ecology Party MP Yorgos Perdikis, Vera Polykarpuy from AKEL Party and Nikolas Hristou from EDEK Party as well as by Socialist Young Groups.

Activist Despo Pilavaki said: “Turkey is changing the names of the streets and borough of Afrin and it continues to threaten and persecute people there.”

Activists also reminded that as they protested against the wall build by Israel in Palestine, thus they now protest the wall Turkey is building to isolate Afrin even further.

“We stand by Kurds who are facing the same problems we are - said Cyprus activists in a statement - we will resist together against fascism. Turkey is using the same tactic: occupation and assimilation to its territory. The wall built by Turkey in Afrin is against international law. The countries of the international coalition should do something.”
