Protest in Hamburg against Turkish attacks on Kurdistan

In Hamburg, hundreds of people demonstrated against Turkey's aggressive expansion policy in South Kurdistan on the occasion of the day of action of the Defend Kurdistan Initiative.

Within the framework of the “Defend Kurdistan - against the Turkish occupation!" initiative, an international day of action took place today. On this occasion, hundreds of people took to the streets in Hamburg to protest against Turkey's war of aggression on South Kurdistan, which is against international law.

The march from Altona to Schanze was followed by a demonstration which was accompanied by several speeches and ended with the preliminary final declaration of the international peace delegation.

Background of the Day of Action

The Day of Action was initiated by the "International Delegation for Peace and Freedom" in order to mobilize against Turkey's aggressive expansionist policy in South Kurdistan and to set a sign against the deafening silence that prevails among the international community and the public in the face of this war. The occupation operation of the Turkish army in the southern part of Kurdistan (Kurdistan Region of Iraq) has been going on for ten weeks.

Delegation trip to South Kurdistan

In early June, the delegation traveled to South Kurdistan to draw attention to the Turkish invasion of the region, which has been ongoing since the night of April 23-24, and to hold talks with politicians and civil society. The population affected by the occupation rejects the war and appeals to the international community to build diplomatic pressure to stop the invasion. In response to this call for help, 150 politicians, academics, human rights activists and activists from 14 European countries formed a peace delegation and traveled to South Kurdistan to create international publicity.

Despite severe obstruction of the delegation by German and Iraqi authorities, who prevented an important part of the delegation, including several members of parliament, from leaving Germany or entering Hewlêr (Erbil), the delegation was successful. A broad, international media coverage was achieved and the initiative "Defend Kurdistan - against the Turkish occupation!" was proclaimed.
