Protests against Amara ban - UPDATE

Security forces are being diployed in and around Amara and Urfa as well as in the whole of the Kurdish region, as people took to the streets to celebrate Öcalan’s birthday since early last night.

The Interior Minister’s ban on the Amara march to celebrate PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s birthday today, 4 April, has been protested against in the region where shops have been closed in many districts including Cizre, Suruç and Derik.

Except for pharmacies and bakeries, all shops in the districts have been closed to protest against the obstacles put before people who have been denied permission before departing to Amara from their cities.

Celebrations have been made for Öcalan’s birthday in many cities including Van and Manisa where thousands of people came together and voiced their commitment to the Kurdish people’s leader.

Police took intense security measures in the region and forced shopkeepers to open their shops.

On the other hand, convoys of people coming from other cities to Urfa were stopped and denied permission to leave the cities. Four buses departing from Adana were imposed pecuniary penalty.

The convoys on Diyarbakýr and Urfa way have also been stopped and searched in detail by police teams who also perform an identity check on the people at six separate points.

As people protest the ban put on Amara march, police severely attacked the people joining celebrations in Þýrnak for PKK Leader Abdullah Öcalan’s birthday. Clashes continue between police and people who are responding the attack with stones.

The police intervention came yet before the beginning of celebrations.

On the other hand, Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) committees have also departed from Suruç district of Urfa.

In a statement made here after a meeting attended by BDP deputies and DTK co-chair Aysel Tuðluk, BDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaþ said that; “As the representatives of the people, we will go to Amara and celebrated the birthday of Mr. Öcalan. Fascistic and martial practices are being practiced here today when at the same time Kenan Evren is being tried for the 1980 military coup. This ban is an arbitrary decision made by the Parliament.”
