Qasim Xirawi: Turkey wants to do in Iraq what it has done in Syria

Political observer Qasim Xirawi said that the presence of 4,000 Turkish soldiers in Iraq and more than 22,000 violations against the country shows that Turkey wants to do in Iraq what it has done in Syria, trying to seize some parts of Iraqi territory.

The Turkish state carried out a massacre in the village of Perex in Zakho on July 20, claiming the lives of nine civilians and leaving dozens injured. After this massacre, Iraq submitted a complaint against Turkey to the UN’s Security Council.

Yesterday, an Iraqi delegation consisting of high-ranking army officers visited the village of Perex. After the visit, a huge photo of the Turkish flag placed on the territory of the Kurdistan Region was circulated, sparking a public debate in Iraq.

Iraqi political observer Xirawi spoke to Rojnews media outlet on the subject and said, “This image we see on Iraqi soil is not just a message. It represents Turkey's open confiscation of Iraqi lands under the pretext of national and border security.”

Xirawi remarked that Turkey committed 22 thousand violations against Iraq in 2018 and deployed 4,000 soldiers to Iraqi soil. “An overt plan against Iraqi territory and its strategic borders is being carried out. The huge photo of the Turkish flag on Iraqi territory is a clear indication that Turkey continues to occupy Iraqi territory. This reminds us of what Turkey has done in Syria under the pretext of establishing a safe zone,” he added.
