NGOs and political parties strongly reacted against the fire incident in Urfa Prison where 13 prisoners burnt to death and five others suffered injuries. The statements emphasized that the government and the prime minister is responsible for the massacre.
MEYA-DER Diyarbakýr Branch Chair Leyla Ayaz reminded of government authorities statements which said that those who lost their life in the fire are political prisoners. Ayaz pointed out that the government is trying to cover up the massacre and remarked that the Prime Minister, the President, Ministry of Justice, security authorities and prisons administrator should be brought to book for the massacre.
Human Rights Association (IHD) Diyarbakýr Branch Chair Raci Bilici reminded of prisoner Erkan Gümüþtaþ who set himself on fire in Urfa E Type Closed Prison last year to protest against poor prison conditions. Bilici underlined that thirteen people were left to burn to death alive because of the fact that the doors of the prison werent opened during the fire which was intervened after a long time. Bilici called attention to increasing right abuses and anti-democratic practices in Turkish prisons and called on the Ministry of Justice and the Prime Minister to respect prisoners rights on the basis of universal law norms.
TUHAD-FED General President Zübeyde Teker evaluated the governments policies on prisons as unlawful and inhumane and remarked that the Ministry of Justice has not taken a single step in the face of earlier calls to abandon these unlawful and inhumane policies. Teker noted that the AKP government and the Ministry of Justice are responsible for the massacre and called on the government to bring an end to its fascistic policies in the nearest time.
ÖDP (Freedom and Solidarity Party) also pointed to the AKP government as responsible for the massacre and remarked that the government tried to cover up their crime by declaring prisoners guilty for starting a discussion among each other and leading to a fire. ÖDP also called attention to the over-capacity problem in Turkish prisons and called on all responsible authorities, Minister of Justice Sadullah Ergin in particular, to resign.
DSÝP reminded of Back to Life operation in 2000 and evaluated numerous prison massacres as a tradition of the state. The DSÝP statement pointed out that the government is planning to build new prisons instead of explaining the reason for the arrest of thousands of Kurdish poilticians and activists.
